Disclosing the discount or doing it informally does not cure the ethical violation of providing unequal terms.

Accrual accounting records revenues and expenses when they are earned or incurred, regardless of when the cash is actually received or paid. Cash basis accounting only records transactions when money changes hands, making the other options incorrect.

In remote depositions across jurisdictions, a reporter’s notarial authority may not extend to the witness’s location; therefore, obtaining a clear stipulation from all parties on the record is standard practice to validate the remote oath. Federal rules do not universally grant nationwide jurisdiction, and written affidavits do not replace the verbal oath in depositions.

The court reporter certifies the official record and bears ultimate responsibility for its accuracy, regardless of whether they employ a scopist or proofreader. Blaming the scopist or the attorney abdicates the reporter’s fundamental duty to certify a verbatim transcript.

The steno notes are the primary and official record; audio is merely a backup tool. If the steno notes are clean and accurate, the reporter should simply translate them and certify the transcript without unnecessarily alarming the parties or halting production.

Court reporters must avoid any conduct that compromises their impartiality or the appearance of impartiality; posting about ongoing high-profile cases on social media violates this standard. Even neutral posts can draw unwanted attention or questions regarding the reporter’s neutrality.

CART is an accessibility accommodation, and its effectiveness relies heavily on the readability of the display for the specific consumer. Customizing the visual output with the consumer ensures the accommodation is effective, whereas legal formatting or disabling phonetics defeats the purpose of realtime accessibility.

Court reporters are legally bound by state statutes and local rules regarding the retention of steno notes, which dictate how long notes must be kept before they can be destroyed. Destroying them immediately or giving them to unauthorized parties violates these legal retention requirements.

The court reporter is responsible for maintaining the custody and integrity of the exhibits marked during the deposition. Relying on screenshots, omitting the exhibits, or having the witness read them does not secure the actual evidentiary files required for the official record.

Creating a case-specific job dictionary prevents niche terminology or acronyms from conflicting with standard words in the reporter’s main dictionary in future, unrelated jobs. Adding them to the main dictionary causes future conflicts, and relying on phonetics degrades the realtime feed.

When subpoenaed for records, a reporter must inform the parties of record to allow them time to protect their privileges or file a motion to quash. Immediately complying denies them this right, ignoring it violates the law, and deleting the file constitutes spoliation of evidence.
